a visit to new york

While Nikolai gallivanted in the former Soviet Union, I took a little trip down to New York.

And wow. I love Brooklyn.

My friend Katie and her boyfriend Sean were amazing hosts, especially considering my spur of the moment arrival. I had a wonderful evening hanging out on their roof, looking at Manhattan, and making our way to the neighboring roof party, and hearing about Kurt Vonnegut as a family man.

Unfortunately, I can't post a lot of my favorite photos of the trip, but I was lucky enough to tour what I am completely positive is the most interesting theatrical set in New York, if not the country.

But I am always able to post pictures of the beautiful Prospect Park Swans.

I honestly had no idea how beautiful and livable Brooklyn is. Relative to Manhattan, which is not a very high bar. I started thinking about if I could do it, though I am really not sure I could. I think Beijing may have ruined big cities for me, alas.

Below, a picture of a pretty pretty vintage dress that was most definitely way too small, but I couldn't help but photograph.

...And back to the real stuff! Arriving the day after gay marriage passed and during pride weekend was such a joy! Everyone was in a wonderful mood.

New York city was as lovable and cuddly as I have ever seen it. I guess they have gone soft!

All in all, the take home lesson is- I need to take the Bolt Bus more often!

the arrival of the stanley cup.

It is always a shock to be innocently out and about and come upon shirtless drunk and screaming masses, but not in a bad way. I love anarchy and collective joy, and I think its easier to appreciate as an outsider, without the self consciousness of a true believer.

Suffice to say, Boston is now home to the Stanley Cup. And South Boston was out in force.

There is truly nothing like seeing the man love of a several day old sports victory. Everywhere we went, men waved there shirts, looked into each others eyes and let out a primal scream. Beautiful.

This doesn't need any description. There is nothing I can add. I will tell you it is an ambulance, your heart will tell you the rest.

You know its a good day in Boston when at least 10% of the population are cops (who received a lot of irish man to irish man love, by the way)

... and 5% are walking talking bear surprises.

Anyway, eventually we ran out of Bruins fans, met a man who painted Stephen Colbert's face on the sofa and brought it to the street, and had our photos taken for his blog. Maybe you can find it if you care to. I won't hold your hand, you know how to use the internet.

when i grow up...

i want to be her! she is absolutely kicking the red hat lady's asses. i mean TOTALLY destroying them. purple and red are just a terrible combo... this lady would never feel the need to prove her kookiness by wearing something less than amazing.

cave of forgotten dreams

I am dying over this! Dying! I love Werner so much, and caves, and french people too! And 3D!

I listened to Werner's recent Fresh Air interview and Terry Gross totally said his name Werner, instead of Verner. Why, Terry, why!? The Verner way is the German way- both more accurate and more fun to say. Terry Gross is basically like a really cool but fundamentally embarrassing relative you like to hang out with but then asks you when you are planning to have a baby in front of everyone. And its so much worse than when your openly lame relatives do it because she is supposed to be- and almost is- the coolest.

strange and beautiful art

john lurie has some amazing new art up on his facebook page.

"There is a caveman in my apartment examining the fur. I wish he would leave"

"deer and stoplight"

"Give Up. Americans Have the Right to Bear Arms"

I really love John's art, music and film work. Its an odd thing that the internet allows you to "meet" people whose work you admire- in only a small way, but one which feels somehow more personal than a gallery meet and greet or a sighting on the street. The title of this blog is taken from the title of one of his paintings, and though no one reads it at this (or perhaps any) point, I feel like it is best to pay some tribute to an artist who is both awesome, and in his way quite friendly.

There's lots more at his page.

And if you haven't you need to see Fishing with John. I am partial to the Willem Dafoe episode personally...
